UP electric buses can be tracked on Google map

Lucknow: Close to 130 routes on which electric buses will ply in 14 cities will be mapped on Google. This will help in better planning and management of the routes. The directorate of urban transport is getting the routes mapped by Remote Sensing Application Centre (RSAC), Lucknow.

It would be possible to know of congestion and obstruction on routes through Google maps. Passengers would also be able to check traffic conditions on the routes. “Centre has given one year as the deadline to start operations of buses in the chosen cities. We have to get the needed infrastructure ready,” said joint director, urban transport, UP, Ajit Singh.

A private firm has been awarded the contract to operate the buses in all 14 cities. The tendering process was approved by the state cabinet on Monday. A total of 700 electric buses would ply in 14 cities. UP would now work to get the funds sanctioned to create infrastructure which majorly includes creating charging sheds and depots.

In October, decks were cleared for operation of 700 electric buses in 14 cities after cabinet approved the proposal. While 600 buses will be operated under the centre’s FAME-II scheme in 11 cities of the state, which are Lucknow, Meerut, Prayagraj, Agra, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Moradabad, Aligarh, Jhansi and Bareilly 100 other buses would be operated in Gorakhpur, Shahjahanpur, Mathura-Vrindavan by the state government under UP Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2019.

Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra will get 100 buses each; Prayagraj, Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Meerut, Mathura-Vrindavan will get 50 buses each and Moradabad, Aligarh, Jhansi, Bareilly, Gorakhpur and Shahjahanpur will get 25 buses each. The total cost of the project is Rs 965 crore.

Union government is promoting operation of electric buses through its FAME (Faster Adoption And Manufacture of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles) scheme. Under FAME-II the centre will provide states with a Rs 45 lakh subsidy for every electric bus that it hires. State will not purchase the buses. Private firms will operate the buses for ten year period.
